I love how, once you start following the rabbit hole, one thing leads you to the next and before you know it you’ve uncovered a whole new world you never knew existed?

Well as you know already, before heading over the to the Philippines I had a friend introduce me to some of the movers and shakers over there… People like Chris Ducker, Justin and Joe from the Adsense flippers and that’s to name just a few.

Anyway, while catching up with those guys they all started talking about one of the biggest communities of lifestyle entreprenerurs on the web. A few of them had actually just returned from speaking at a workshop in Thailand put on by the very same community.

So, I started to do a little digging (like I always do) and found out that the guys behind it have a podcast called “Lifestyle Business Podcast“. Now before I start sharing anything with my you I like to do my own due dilligence to make sure I always point you in the right direction.

So I downloaded their back catalogue of episodes and started listening in…

I started with one, then two, then three and before I knew it I downloaded all the episodes on itunes (60+) and have now almost listened to them all (in x2 speed of course!).

Now why the heck would I do that? Well quite simply, these guys rock! They’re talking real, in the trenches, gettin’ down a dirty entrepreneurial meat and potatos and I love it.

Can you guess what I did next?

I got in touch with Dan (one of the guys behind it all) and asked if I could interview him for you guys, so I could find out a little more.

You’ll be happy to know he said “yes” and I asked all the hard questions… and can now verify “these guys are the real deal”.

Ok, if you’ve been watching me for any length of time you know how I feel about outsourcing to the Philippines. I believe it’s perhaps one of the biggest opportunities for small business to gain a competitive advantage.

Unlike many who just talk about it, I put my time and money where my mouth is. Recently I took a group of colleagues, clients and students to the Philippines to meet their teams. Having done it earlier in the year I recognised how critical it is for anyone with a team overseas to go visit them.

Anyway, in the lead up to the trip a friend of mine introduced me to a few cool people in the Philippines – people on the ground, eating, breathing and living this stuff. A couple of the guys were Justin and Joe from the Adsense Flippers.

After a little digging, I started to learn more about these guys and realised not only are they the “real deal” but they’re nice guys too.

So, before heading over there I thought I should get them on the phone, and ask a few questions about the Philippines and BPO (Business Process Outsourcing). After reading some of the salesletters on Clickbank, it’s easy to get seduced into thinking that you can put up a website and within a few short weeks have it automatically deposit large amounts of cash into your bank account. I mean who wouldn’t want to believe that’s possible?

Sadly, the truth of the matter is, building an online business is hard work! And deep down you know this is true – anything worthwhile takes hard work.

Knowing full well what it takes to be successful I always have a soft spot for other entrepreneurs starting out. I know it’s hard and a little support goes a long way. So when someone reaches out, and is genuinely doing the hard work, I’m all too happy to help!

Most recently, I had a lovely lady in Melbourne named Kate Luella (bloggerinterviewspodcast.com)  reach out and ask if I’d take part in an interview series for a product she was creating. The product was all about blogging and although I don’t consider myself as a world class blogger- I am pretty good with Internet Marketing and building online businesses

One of the best ways to get yourself seen and recognized in your online market is to “stand on the shoulders of giants” as I like to say.

That means leveraging the celebrity and communities of people in related fields that have already done the work to build their rankings.

By partnering with these types, not only do you get nearly instant high-level exposure, but you also get added credibility when being represented by these giants.

Of course there’s a problem with this. Many entrepreneurs suffer from what I call “giant anxiety.” They worry about how they can even approach a guru in their niche, much less the chance to interview them or have them host some of their content.

Well, that’s a legitimate concern. And everyone feels it at some time or another. Even me.

Most important… Get Started

I do a weekly podcast with my partner Dom Goucher. Today we often chat with some of the biggest names in the online and offline business world.

Thousands and thousands of entrepreneurs now download our interviews and listen to them every week. But it wasn’t always like this.

When we started, we had no one to talk to.

We literally did our first 30 or so weeks of podcasts just talking to each other before we got our first guest. And that first guest was a friend of ours.

Now for some, reaching out to a celebrity in their niche is not really a problem. Some people can just walk right up to their hero and ask for an interview. (And getting shot down has no effect on them.)

But for the majority of entrepreneurs, it can be a bit of a barrier to overcome. Not to worry. I’ve got an alternative to share with you that will get you the same net effect, without the anxiety of that celebrity contact.

I call it platform leverage.

Rather than focusing on the communities that experts have built, simply go to the communities that technology has created. Places where everyone goes in search of valuable content. These platforms are ranked enormously high and get literally millions of hits every day.

This puts your content right in the middle of all the traffic you want. And that’s an important advantage.

Think about Nike

When Nike first started out, they began by working to build their brand and make great shoes. To get their name known, to get the offline equivalent of first page rankings on Google, they used a similar strategy. But they did it by reaching out to already established shoe outlets. Places where customers were already looking for athletic shoes.

The one thing they didn’t do, was try to build their own major shoe outlet and then attract customers to them. That’s the equivalent of what entrepreneurs online are doing every day.

Instead, Nike put their shoes – the value they created – out where the customers were already going. (Eventually they did create the NikeTown franchise, but by the time they did, people were lining up to get in…)

Today most entrepreneurs are trying to do too much themselves. They are trying to create their products, build their brands, and then on top of it all, build a platform that

Think about this. Where will more eyeballs potentially find your blog?

Under your own obscure, just purchased domain? Or on a site where tens of thousands of people already go looking for new content every day?

These platforms are all out there. And they’re inviting you in free of charge. Sites like Amazon, Kindle, iTunes, Newsstand, and many more. All of them draw enormous crowds for the media that they offer their visitors. All of them spend literally millions of dollars to attract that traffic to their platfroms.

Why not put that to work for you?

So here’s today’s action step: Find one platform that you can contribute to regularly. And then get busy posting every week.

As an entrepreneur, there’s a very good chance you’ve got a millions of ideas and sometimes you find it hard to identify which ones to focus on. You might ask yourself, which opportunities will have the best chance of success?

It’s important to develop the skill of when to say “no”… “no, this isn’t the right idea for me now.”

But how do you know when to say “yes” and when to say “no”?

It can be hard to let go of your ideas – often you’re emotionally invested and you’ve grown attached to them. But the fact remains, there’s not enough time in the day to do everything and you need a way to filter out what you will and won’t do.

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about this and how to best filter opportunities to find the ones that put the odds in your favour.

With this bouncing around in my head, I actually had a mutual friend introduce me to a guy called “Dale Beaumont” (www.dalebeaumont.com). I’d heard his name through a few colleagues – all of which gave glowing reports – but I’d never really seen any of his work.

Anyway, after digging a little deeper, I came across a presentation he’d given called “7 Little Things That Make A Big Difference In Business” and I loved it!

In short, over the course of 12 years, Dale has refined his opportunity and business filters down to 7 components. 7 components to increase the chance of success while building a business.

He’s hit the nail on the head and, just a week or two ago, I asked Dale to join me on a call to walk you through his insights – I really believe you’re going to love them too.

For most business owners it almost seems like a right of passage to work 100 work weeks – sacrificing the now for the promise of something better in the future. Often, in the moment, you even get a sense of satisfaction feeling like “this is what it takes to be successful”… but I know, deep down you question if there’s a better way.

Surely the Richard Bransons of the world don’t work like this?
What’s the difference between the way he’s working and the way you are?
Are you missing something?

If you’re putting out fires left and right – getting caught up in busy work, maybe you should just STOP… for a moment. Give yourself a chance to BREATHE…

And in this moment, float up and out of your body looking down on your life seeing it all laid out on a table. Seeing that life is made up of a collection of independent systems. Systems that work separately AND together – the output of which adds up to where you are today.

When you think about it, it kind of makes sense, all these systems running, and their output from years past, making you who you are today.

The system you follow to decide what you eat and how you exercise. The system you follow with how and when you catch up with friends and family. The systems that run your business – from answering emails to keeping your books.

If this were true, it begs the question “Are your systems working optimally?” and are you even conscious these systems are at work?

If they’re not quite right, maybe that’s why you haven’t been hitting your goals?

Now, I’ve always been a systems guy at heart, from my early days working with stock market trading systems. To design systems just made sense because they remove the emotion typically involved in trading. By having a clear set of rules, you know what you should be doing at any point in time – buy, hold, or sell.

Systems lead you towards consistent results.

So why should all areas of your life be any different?

I recently came across a business owner/author who just “got it” and with this thinking he took his chaotic personal and business life and turned it on it’s head. He “worked the system” to put himself in an enviable position for most entrepreneurs.

He followed a system to work less and make more – who wouldn’t want that?

But he didn’t stop there… he went on to document his story so that entrepreneurs like you and I could put these principles into action.

Sam Carpenter - Mr. Work The System.

I’m referring to the author Sam Carpter and his book “Work The System“. In this book Sam shares how he went from working 80-100 hours a week for 15 years, with an income just barely enough to support his two kids and himself – to now working two hours a week with a personal income that is more than twenty times what it was.

His business, Centratel, a telephone answering service with approximately 2,000 competitors nationwide is now, by several tangible statistical measurements, #1 in the industry, and shows a net profit of over 40%.

Like you, I wanted to know his secret… I wanted to dig a little deeper to find out more. I wanted to know if he was the real deal.

We’ll that’s how I feel about some of the people jumping to conclusions and shooting their mouth off with regards to Google’s most recent algrythmic update.

Early on in my internet marketing career I came across a guy called Jeff Johnson – I first saw him on John Reese’s Traffic Secrets, then again on Yanik’s Underground Seminar and then I was one of the first to get his 25k DVDs. He introduced me to the idea of big networks, work wikis, sneaky SEO and testing on a grand scale.

Now a lot has changed since then and I haven’t been watching Jeff as closely as I once was – that said, I still tremendously respect the way he thinks. This guy is an astute marketer! With a corporate background he knows how to look at business in a way most internet marketers don’t.

Well I’m here to tell you that behind every success story there were many unspoken failures along the way. It’s true what they say, “an overnight success takes about 10 years”…

And I’m no exception.

A little while back I was interviewed by Yanik Silver (a legend in the internet marketing realm) where I revealed my story – “what it really takes to succeed online”. The ups and the downs.

Have you ever just taken a moment to, stop, and wonder about the future of the internet? Where is it going? What will happen in 2012?

Which ever way you look at it the web as we know it is definately changing. With SEO in particular, we have seen more changes in the last 12 months that we have seen in the last 5 years.

I remember a time when Myspace was top dog and people would search using AltaVista or Lycos but those days are now behind us… Google knows this more than most, the web is changing and the only companies to survive will be those who evolve.

So what is the future of the internet in 2012?

I’ve been around this online marketing game for quite a while now and every time I say the word “outsourcing” I get one of two reactions. The first is a look of intrigue – the idea of building an outsourced team is enticing to most business owners. It can really save you time and money.

The second is a look of horror. Either the person I’m talking to is scared of the prospect of managing a team of staff half way around the world, or they have tried it before – and failed miserably.

Both of these reactions are perfectly normal A lot of online business owners have major problems when it comes to outsourcing. Many have tried and failed. Some still continue to implement outsourcing within their business, but can’t seem to achieve the results they’re looking for. This begs the question… So why bother?

Well, anyone that’s tried building an online business knows it’s literally impossible to do all the work yourself. Whether we like it or not, online marketing has become a “Team Sport”.

If you have a great team, the reality is you can get more done with less work, and achieve far greater results. In fact, I don’t know anyone who is really kicking goals online who doesn’t have a strong team behind them.

But as I said…

Outsourcing can cut both ways. If you implement it correctly, it can be the best thing that happens to your business, BUT if you get it wrong, it can be a disaster – wasting loads of time and money.

Ken Evoy (the guy behind SiteSell and Site Build It) has been one of my biggest influences (he was the first one to show me how to build a an online business) and recently I had the honour of interviewing him – for the second time.

Did you miss SEO MozCon 2011? Me too

If you’re not too sure what I’m talking about, it’s a the annual conference put on by SEOMoz… the guys behind a whole bunch of cool SEO tools. What I like most about it is that it’s outside the typical Internet Marketing bubble many live in – it’s SEO for the big boys. The companies that attend this conference are the companies that handel SEO and online marketing for the likes of Amazon, Zappos, REI and Delta Airlines. Serious SEO at the corporate level!

As you could imagine there’s great lessons to be learned – especially since these companies have to stay super white hat – they can’t be caught jeopardizing a multi-million dollar brand online.

Google is piloting the display of author information in search results to help users discover great content. This feature is being rolled out gradually and will be implemented algorithmically, so author information will not always display in search results. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:

To identify the author of a blog or article, Google checks for a connection between the content page (such as an article), an author page, and a Google Profile. Authorship markup uses the rel attribute (part of the open HTML5 standard) in links to indicate the relationship between a content page and an author page.

I know it all sounds pretty technical (you can read all of googles notes here) but its implications are pretty huge so I wanted to show you how it’s done. Watch the video tutorial below to see how Ryan adds it to this blog and then maybe you can do the same?

Have you heard the fuss about YouTube terminating and suspending accounts? Now before things get out of context and people start speculating what’s going on, I wanted to set the record straight.

I lined up a call with YouTube expert and video marketer Gideon Shalwick (the first person I called when my account was terminated) to answer some of the big questions floating around right now.

… but I was just too damn excited

I wanted to share with you a curious story from a long term @YouTube supporter.

Yesterday morning I was “terminated” from YouTube with no warning and no explanation of why. Throughout my sites I’ve embed hundreds of videos all of which now display this message – it’s really sad when I think about how much hard work has gone into creating them (months of work) and the value they have added to the YouTube community. Over 350 videos. 150,000 views and loads of great comments and feedback…  Gone.

Having spent yesterday reading everything I could on the topic, I’ve now made a submission through YouTube’s process of appeals… I also made a submission through their suspended account inquiry form to (at the very least) find out what’s going on.

Having seen Darren Rowse of ProBlogger yesterday suffer a similar fate I thought I too should write a open letter to YouTube. Fingers crossed this is read by the right person at YouTube who can fight for a long time YT supporter.

Update: 47 likes, 59 retweets, 82 comments and countless more FB comments and retweets not referencing this page but my name instead. Really hope someone at YT sees this – 2 strikes and I was out and one was over 6 months old… this really isn’t fair… full details listed below.

Dear YouTube,

I still love you and want to love you for years to come.

Having been a user and supporter of YouTube for well over 5 years now – I’ve been your biggest fan. From the moment I met you I knew we had something special. I’ve uploaded hundreds of videos and had hundreds of great comments on my channel www.youtube.com/theSEOmethod

With so much spam and rubbish out there on the web I paid particular attention to respect the community and only put out my best material. Heck I have even delivered a full day workshop on how to use YouTube the right way here in Melbourne and had uploaded the best bits right onto my channel.

I really thought we had something special.

But today you broke my heart (thanks for the inspiration Darren @ProBlogger)

I was just about to go for a walk when I thought I’d check my emails. I had a client who said:

“Hi David, I was just watching your seomethod videos, then suddenly I got the message that your youtube account was suspended. Just wanted to let you know, BTW great videos” – Johan Brattberg

I thought it must have been something at his end at first but when I visited my YouTube channel I saw I had been terminated

But I didn’t do anything?! and I really pride myself on the quality of the material I put out. My goal is to make YouTube a better place and show people how to market the right way… they don’t need spam or scams.

“Just provide good valuable content and you’ll be right!” – that’s what I used to say. Sadly that doesn’t seem to be enough.

To make matters worse I didn’t even find out what I’d apparently done wrong. The closest thing I could find was (after searching through my Gmail account) about 6 months ago I received a message saying that one of my videos had violated YouTube’s community guidelines.

I recall, at the time, doing what I thought was the right thing and deleted out the video… I find it’s always best to err on the cautious side and I wanted to do what was right by YouTube. I tried to find out what was wrong with the video but never heard back. I didn’t think too much about it and continued on my merry way.

I then found another email that was sent about 2 hours before I found my account had been terminated – it referenced issue with a video titled “How to make money online – 80/20 rule”… I’m not 100% sure what caused the trigger since, again, the content of the wasn’t spammy in the slightest – all you have to do is watch it and you’ll know right away.

Curiously I didn’t get a chance to “right” any so called “wrongs”… my account was just terminated. Like I’d done before, I would have happily done whatever YouTube asked.

When the news came I began my research, I scoured every inch of the web looking for answers. I read through hundreds of threads on the YouTube support forums, I posted my own thread and I even contacted everyone I knew who might have some insights.

I found reference to YouTube’s 3 strikes and you’re out policy… but that didn’t apply here since I’d only had 2 and one of them was over 6 month’s old. I even heard through the grape vine that Darren Rowse of ProBlogger had been hit too on the same day.

Now I don’t know if Darren’s situation was exactly the same as mine since the message on his account was slightly different… but it was a very strange coincidence.

What was even more interesting (and hopeful) was that Darren’s account was re-activated this morning. Sure he’s got a little more of a following than I do and after his “open letter to YouTube” he must of got someone’s attention – now I know it’s possible.

Although Darren didn’t receive any notification or emails about it – his account just started working again – it’s good to know someone is watching.

Anyway, YouTube I’m not too sure what to say – I have been a long time advocate of yours, I’ve provided only my best content and I always do my best by you.

Perhaps at the very least can we talk? I still love you and I want to continue to help educate people how to use YouTube responsibly.

Hoping this post is read by someone who loves YouTube as much as I do.

First thing that comes to mind is that as stated on YouTube Community Guidelines:

“Community Guidelines strikes last for six months from the date they are received. Notice is provided by email and at next log-in; for reference, copies of the notices are also logged within a user’s account. Accrual of strikes results in penalties as follows:

• First Strike: The first strike on an account is considered a warning.
• Second Strike: If an account receives two strikes within a six month period, the ability to post new content to YouTube from that account is disabled for two weeks. If there are no further issues, full privileges are restored automatically after the two week period.
• Third Strike: If an account receives a third Community Guidelines strike within six months (before the first strike has expired) the account is terminated.“

So I thought we were supposed to get 3 strikes before we are out? Also, I thought strikes disappear after 6 months (the first one should have expired right)? And that’s not to mention I’m still not 100% clear what I’ve done and they say they can’t give more detail.

Really quite frustrating… I just want to do what’s right here. Anyone else see this as not fair?
